Allowances, explained without the fog
An allowance is a placeholder with a number. It is not a gift. It is not a trick, unless someone hides it.

If the tile is not selected, there is no honest way to pretend it is priced. An allowance says: we have reserved this much. If you choose something that costs more, the delta is yours. If you choose less, the delta should come back. That sentence is the entire subject. Everything else is choreography.
Where allowances are legitimate
Finishes still in design. Light fixtures. Appliances. Landscape that has not been drawn. Places where waiting for a perfect selection would stall a bid you needed for a loan.
Where they become fog
A single fat 'allowance' that covers half the house. A number borrowed from a builder-grade package while the rendering shows a stone that does not exist at that price. A conversation that never returns to the list.
Our rule
List them. Review them. Convert them to selections on a decision calendar so the field is not waiting on a marble that has not been chosen. An open allowance schedule is not a marketing phrase. It is a document.
